  14. <p>     DIED. John K. Fairbank, 84, pre-eminent American scholar of
  15. Chinese history; in Cambridge, Mass. Educated at Harvard and
  16. Oxford, Fairbank first went to China in the early 1930s and
  17. joined the Harvard faculty in 1936. During World War II he
  18. served in the Office of Strategic Services and as an aide to the
  19. U.S. ambassador to China. In 1946 Fairbank returned to Harvard,
  20. where he helped build one of the world's leading centers of East
  21. Asian studies. After Chiang Kai-shek's army was routed by the
  22. communists in 1949, Senator Joseph McCarthy charged that
  23. Fairbank helped "lose China" by turning the Truman
  24. Administration against Chiang. In the 1960s Fairbank advocated
  25. U.S. diplomatic recognition of the Beijing regime and its
  26. admission to the U.N.
